Billy Cobham released "Crosswind" in 1973 which feature this hit track "Heather" which was sampled by Souls of Mischief in their classic of 93' Til Infinity. Wait for the saxophone at about 3-4 minutes in!
This is a cool one, and Im sure any Cypress Hill fan will appreciated it. Flora Purim gives us "Uri (Wind)" the original sample to Cypress Hills "Cock The Hammer".
Anne Peebles! What a voice! Anne Peebles originality has created a hand full of Hip Hop classics including Missy Elliots "The Rain" produced by Timbaland, but was also sampled in Reflection Eternals "Memories Live". Reflection Eternal consists of two members, Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek.
Nasty Nas hit us with "Just a Moment" sampled from "Will You Cry" by a 70's group by the name of Chic.
Heres a real hidden gem, by Bola Sete entitled "Bettina" from the hit track also by A Tribe Called Quest, "8 Million Stories"
Im going to keep my descriptions pretty brief as you're probably pretty sick of reading after my paragraph below. Heres The Chambers Brothers with Funky. This is the original to the underground classic of A Tribe Called Quests "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo".
Okay, so this is the finalized Blog of Heads Unite, I felt I was missing one thing --Recognizing the original tracks that our Hip Hop classics came from, and to be honest, its quite interesting! Im going to be honest, Ive encountered numerous older people belittling Hip Hop with statements like "you cant hear what their saying, or "rapping" about" one word for that, or name I should say, is Common, or Redman! and other statements like "Oh so and so stole that from so and so" Example being Pete Rock stole T.R.O.Y. from Tom Scott (Today) (the track posted above) but thats really not the case, because not only has Pete Rock gotten his permission to use the 8 bars (or how many there might be), but Hip Hop Heads recognize that if it werent for Tom Scott creating Today, there would be no T.R.O.Y. and I know for one thing, that track is a classic...hands down classic, to everybody, no matter what (sub) genre of Hip Hop you may listen to whether it be Underground, Old School, South or Commercial. I realize Im rambling on but its for a good cause!
This portion of the site will recognize the Original Samples our favorite producers like Pete Rock, QTip, and DJ Premier among others have used.
The other really cool aspect of this section is, if you think to back in the early 90s, there was no internet or resources of that nature to dig or (track down) these artists or tracks, I mean think of these guys going into record shops, basically just randomly picking out records or records that had some relevance to their lives, (maybe recommended by older peers) and literally went through every track and found that mind numbing sound that put them in another place (mentally) worked with it and produced a classic for their own genre i.e. Hip Hop. Now not only does Tom Scott (as an example) have recognition from his fans and genre but the Hip Hop world as well.
So to start it off on a really good note..no pun intended Ive come to Today by Tom Scott, I personally love this track, right from the start, and then when that saxophone drops...crazy, I get chills. This track was obviously used in They Reminisce Over You by Pete Rock and CL Smooth but was also used by a fellow Canadian by the name of Classified with the track Times Up. Class actually made that track when he was 16!...16!..in Canada! hes getting close to 30 now, I can only imagine how he came upon this record back then...nearly impossible.
